In Galaxy Unfurled, the fate of the galaxy and all the space-faring civilizations hang in the balance as the threat of interstellar war grows imminent.

the growing unrest among the galactic legions forebodes of interstellar war. Posturing of alliances and positioning of fleets, and yet, even as the galactic warlords arm themselves to the fangs in preparation for combat, civilization blooms on lush new blue-green worlds, undeterred..."

The year is 0. We decided to start counting years over again because the numbers were just getting too big. Plus, it was quite a momentous year, with important discoveries made about the nature of the Universe, so we figured this was as good a year as any to start recounting. As for the discoveries, these are they in no particular order:

1) WE ARE NOT ALONE. There is some guy named Bob who rents the room upstairs. Oh, and there are aliens living on planets circling nearby stars.

2) The aliens are generally not hospitable toward us, and it is easy to understand why. Among the aliens, it is considered highly offensive to engage in inane smalltalk. Since 99% of all human communication falls into this category, we pretty much had no hope of a peaceful dialog with them. I believe our first words to them were, "So, you're from Alpha Centauri. How's that working out for ya?"

3) Interstellar travel is possible, thanks to the invention of the Awesome Dude Drive. It harnesses the power of Mullet-heads in a mosh pit listening to 80s Heavy Metal music, of which fortunately (fortunately for space travelers and Gen-X, anyway), there is a seemingly endless supply.

4) Space is not void. Instead, quite aptly, space takes up a lot of space. There are huge patches of gunk between the stars known as the Dark Anti Matter Nebulae. No space ship can travel through the Dark Anti Matter Nebulae stuff and it is a Dark Anti Matter Nebulae pain in the rear. So there are 3 options for spacefarers: pilot around the stuff, use a specially engineered Nebular ship that can slowly clear the stuff away, or

5) Wormholes – the galaxy’s subway system. The good news is that there are certain "holes" in space that can teleport a ship from one end of the galaxy to another instantly. The bad news is that whoever created the wormholes had either a terrible sense of direction, or an even worse sense of humor. The wormholes follow no organized pattern, and are just as likely to teleport you next door as they are to send you light-years away.

6) Space Archaeologists, also known in the vernacular as "Sparky-ologists", have found mysterious ancient alien artifacts literally littered around the galaxy. Most times when a ship picks one up, a special "power" is bestowed upon the ship to help it in battle, improve its scanners, or help it in some other arcane way. *

* It is interesting to note that the engineering ability of the creators of these artifacts was so advanced that they traveled from the past to the present (and more-recent past, and future), shared the artifact designs with all ship designers in the various time frames, and by working in tandem with them, made it possible for their artifacts to be forward (way, way forward) compatible with all future (relative to their own time) ships.
